Mindfulness Meditation

Many of us recognise the importance of training our bodies to keep ourselves physically well, but how many of us spend any time training our minds to keep us mentally well as part of our overall wellbeing?  The good news is that we can all cultivate this natural quality to enable us to approach life more wisely.

What is mindfulness?  Literally it means 'mindful awareness' however, in practice, it is what happens when we pay attention, in the present moment, on purpose, without judging whatever we find, or being constantly caught up in thinking about the past or future.

Mindfulness meditation is a gentle way of understanding the mind, enabling us to be less reactive, to be more in control and to make better choices.  It helps us spend more time becoming Human Beings rather than Human Doings!  We cannot stop life's difficulties from happening, but we can develop strategies for dealing with them in a more balanced, calm and constructive way.

Benefits include:

  • Reduced stress, depression, anxiety and irritability
  • More satisfying relationships
  • Reduction on the impact of pain, improved immune system
  • Decreased risk of hypertension
  • Greater awareness, understanding and acceptance of emotions
  • Less frequent negative thoughts
  • Higher self-esteem
  • Better sleep and attention span
  • Feeling more in control of behaviour
  • More resilience
  • Greater compassion for self and others
